Clearing open files on your server
When performing an application update, you may encounter an error message indicating that certain files are open and cannot be replaced. Typically, you can clear these files on the server and continue with the update. On occasion, you may need to restart your server to clear the open files.
Windows Server 2012
The following steps should be performed on server, not your local workstation.
- In the Server Management Console, click Tools, then Computer Management.

- Expand System Tools, Shared Folders, Open Files.

- Sort by the "Open File" column.
- Browse for and select any files in the "..\ServMan" directory. You can select all files in the same directory by clicking the first file then scroll to and SHIFT click on the last file.
- Click Close the Selected Files

Windows Server 2008
The following steps should be performed on server, not your local workstation.

Click the Start menu then select Administrative Tools > Share and Storage Management. The Share and Storage Management window is displayed.

Under Actions on the right, click Manage Open Files.... The Manage Open Files window is displayed.
- Sort by the "Open File" column.
- Browse for and select any files in the "..\ServMan" directory. You can select all files in the same directory by clicking the first file then scroll to and SHIFT click on the last file.
- Click Close Selected.

Windows Server 2003
The following steps should be performed on server, not your local workstation.
- Click the Start menu the select Administrative Tools > Computer Management. The Computer Management window is displayed.
- Click the
icon next the System Tools.
- Click the
icon next to Shared Folders.
- Select the Open Files icon. This displays a list of the open files on the server to the right.
- Sort by the "Open File" column.
- Browse for and select any files in the "..\ServMan" directory. You can selection all files in the same directory by clicking the first file then scroll to and SHIFT click on the last file.
- Right-click on one of the selected files and select Close Open File.
